About this piece: In 1973 I was a freshman at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. A standard required course for freshmen music students with little or no ability playing piano is something called "Piano Lab". The piano is such an essential tool for musicians no matter their major performance area and this class was to develop basic skills. In this case it was a classroom of 16 or so students at electric keyboards. Typically the class would begin with a lesson from the instructor demonstrating the day's tasks. Then we students would each put on our headphones to practice individually. The instructor would also put on headphones to listen to and communicate with each of us in turn from the front of the classroom. During one of these practice sessions, when the instructor had finished with me and moved on to another student, I abandoned the practicing of the day's lesson as this simple melody and chord progression arrived. It's a simple tune that has stayed with me over the years. The title? I can't remember exactly how it came to be, but my best recollection is that is had something to do with a friend unsuccessfully trying to pronounce "Ella Fitzgerald".
