Wrapping up a three-week trip to China and Hong Kong in March 2013 we visited Bangkok, Thailand for a few days. While checking in at the Sheraton Royal Orchid I heard some live jazz being played in the lobby lounge. After settling in to our room I returned to the lounge to listen to pianist Samart Rukpanya with his trio and vocalist for the first live jazz I'd heard since the trip began. It was like a wonderful ear massage! We chatted on the break and I learned that they are students in the music program at their local university. They invited me to come back the following evening and join them on a few tunes. Great spirit and great players - what a treat!
